Cuban Minister of Culture Alpidio Alonso slapped away the cell phone of an independent journalist who was filming him. The act, which took place Wednesday morning outside the Ministry of Culture, set off further violence against a group of artists and activists engaged in a peaceful demonstration.
In the past several days, an anonymous individual sent dire threats to activists and media correspondents of the Cuban LGBTI+ community. The threats were sent as direct messages from a false Facebook profile, which was reported to Facebook and deactivated soon after.
This past Monday the LGBTI+ community celebrated the first anniversary of the march of May 11th, 2019, when several hundred people demonstrated in Havana. This protest followed the cancellation of an official event for the LGBTI+ community that had taken place every year for a decade.
Mariela Castro Espín sparked another controversy this past Tuesday at the socially-distanced, online launch of the annual Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. The organization she leads, Cuba’s National Center for Sexual Education (CENESEX), has organized the event since 2008.
